sailing again

Filed under: Australia — admin @ 12:29 am

So I find myself with so much time to kill as my bus doesn’t leave till almost midnight, and there’s cheap internet here, so I’ll recant the adventure of sailing the whitsundays. I boarded to boat thrs morning. there were 14 passengers, and 3 crew. we set out to see the whitsundays. now that Im sitting here writing I’m not fealing too disripive, so basicly we salied out for a while, then after lunch, did some snorkling and a dive. the diving wasn’t quite as good as where I had gone before, fut was still loads of fun. after this we moving again into a nice calm place where we stayed for the night. the next day, we headed out to whitehaven beach, on of the top beached in the world. then we went to another dive / snorkle site, I decided not to dive this time, and the snorkling was good fun. then off again to a nice cove for the night. that morning we kayaked. we went all over this cove that was suranded by mangroves, and there were loads of turtle in the waters, cool!! it was nice to be in a kayak again. then we had lunch and headed back to land. we had a really good group of people, and then everyone met up later and we went out drinking that night till the wee hours of the morn. much more happened as well, but I can’t be bothers to write about at the moment. so that’s it, I have to kill the next five hours somehow, and then I take my bus south to angus water, and the town of 1770. we’ll see what adventures happen next

beaches and relax’n

Filed under: Australia — admin @ 12:00 am

I got myself sorted in cairns; got my bus ticket, booked some things, and then headed out. My first stop was misson beach. a charming little beach town a couple hours south of cairns. I was only staying here for 1 night, just kind of a stopover before my next place. It was nice, and I could have stayed here longer, but I was knd of eager to get to my next destination, magnetic island. It is called this because as captin cook sailed by it, his cumpas’ went crazy, and he thought the island was doing it. so my first night there is kinda borring. the place I stayed at was nice, but I really didn’t like the vibe, and it just wasn’t for me. so the next day I moved over to the other side of the island, and this place was nice. better people, just very relaxing. the only things I did on the isle of mention were a couple of walks. the second one was around to a couple of secluded bays, which were really nice. but the first walk I did was by far the coolest. it was a walk up into the hills and the old WWII forts, they used as look out stations. and aside from the forts, this was gave the opertunity to see Koala’s in the Wild, which I saw two of. that made he trip. so after being on the island for trhree nights, It was time to move on, and I headed back to the mainlan, and Townsville. It’s and interesting town, a cross between a tourist and industrial town. the main atraction here were the dive boats that went out the the SS Yongala, one of the world best shipwrecks. I didn’t dive it, I was feeling that I had already spent too much money, and could’t justify it, maybe next time. I just kind of wondered the town, did a little walking, and did stuff like laundry etc. so I was ready for my next big adventure, which is where I leave off. I’m in Arlie beach, and tomarow going onto my boat, the Summertime, for a three day, 2 night crouse, where I dive, snorkle, and kayak. so it should be fun.

More about diving

Filed under: Australia — admin @ 3:18 am

So alittle more abou my diving. so I finally got on with my diving course. there’s not relly much more to tell about the first two days, we just had classroom instruction, and pool time, and I did burn my sholders alittle, as I couldn’t get sunscreen on it very often. so that was over, and now it was time for the boat. so we get on the first boat, this is the one that will take us out to the boat will will be living on. and about mid morning, we stop and go for a snorkle, before lunch. this snorkle was our first time on the barrier reef, and it was soo cool. the fist we great, and there was this fist called a maori wrasse, but it was nick named ‘wallie’ and was about a meter lond, and very friendly, and you could touch it’s forhead. so that was a great start, and then we went to dock with our ‘mother ship’ the Atlantic Clipper, and moverd our stuff onboard, had a briefing, and all sorts of things, and then finally, we got to dive. we did our first two dives back to back, and it was really amazing to acutually get down 10 meters under water, much different then in the pool. we were mostly consontrating on doing skills, so we didn’t have much time to explore, but we did see a cool turtle, and some other fish. that night, it was just nice to chill on the boat, and relax. it was so nice just being out on the open water. the only thing about a boat, is you get up early, we were up at quarter to six, so everyone could be in the water before 6:30. but it was a great way to wake up. agin we were mostly doing skills on this dive so we didn;t get to do much exploring, but there were lot’s of cool fish about. after that dive and breakfast, the boat sailed to another reef (we were on norman, and went to saxon), and once there did our second dive that day. with this we finished doing out skills, and then we became certified. we did get a little bit of free time on this dive and saw more cool fish. later that day, we had our first free dive as certified divers, and no instructors around. it was great, so free, what a great new wonderful world. then I had to maike a choice, should I spend the extra $90, and get the adventure cert, which would alow me to dive deeper, and put me only one dive away from my advanced, and I finally said yes. so that night, we had out first night dive, nd we had a little instruction, but mostly just swimming around, and seeing all sorts of cool fish, it really was very different at night. then hat night, becase I had chossen to do the adventure cert, I had to do a buch of hope work, so no parting for me, which was all the best anyway, as I had done four dives that day. the next mornin brought two more cert dives, deep, and navigation. the navigation wasn’t very fun or interextion but the deep was cool, as there were few fish down there, but they were big and cool. then the last dive, which was part of the avdenture cert, but really just a free dive, and that was the best dive yet, I started to really feel confortable under water, and nopw I can’t wait to go back in. then the sad part of having to leave the boat, it was very nice, and I’m so glad to have done it. now a partial list of fish I saw
Napolian Maroi Wrasse, spangled emporer, baracuda (2meters), white tip shark, turtles (big), lion fish, lots of clown fish (nemo), and more that I can’t remember at the moment, but I’ll put in here later.

Transit and arrival

Filed under: Australia — admin @ 4:18 pm

So now I’m here, back on the other side of the world. And I’m I glad to be off planes. So to start of, the first flight was fine. took off on time, and fairly unmemorable. Then I get to SFO find my gate, go through international security. Once I’m there I have something like an hour and a half, and I’m a little hungry. so I look around and the food selection in here sucks, and I don’t really want ot go back out through security, so I decide to just wait. Then shortly before were scedualled to depart, we are informed that they have additional service work to do on the plane, it it will be slightly delayed. Then we find out the the lavatories on the plane don’t work, and there going to switch out our plane. And switch gates. So I grab a small snack, and it holds me a little. We finanaly get to board, and we take off over two hours late. But I’m fine with that, as I will have a huge layover in Sydney. But the plane kinda sucked. I couldn’t get a seat on an isle, and there was someone next to me the whole flight. And the plane still had projection screens for the movies. Which from my seat I couldn’t really see, luckily I didn’t want to watch any of them. So I read and slept, but it wasn’t a good sleep. So anyway, I get into Sydney, go though all the customs and such, and then try and figure out where to go for my next flight. it turns out the domestic terminal is a ways away. The shuttle bus cost five bucks, so I get directions and decide to walk it. it was nice to strech my legs, and it took like 45 min, so that helped me waist more time. So I get the and check in for my Virgin Blue flight up to Cairns. All goes well, I get a great seat, and now I have just a little over four hours to kill. so after waiting my four hours, that flight is delayed, and we get out over an hour late. Eventually I make into cairns, geta suttle into town and to my hostel. finally I’m here. Interesting note, in my flight from Sydney to cairns I never once have to show any kind of ID. So now the next day, I’m off to find out about diving, and the next stage of my adventure.
